Ferrari vs. Porsche - A Personal Note

I told myself 10 years ago that I'd own a Ferrari before I die.

An anonymous follow-on post on my column below got me thinking... I like the Ferrari marque a lot. But, I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever really be able to afford having one. They are known to be unreliable and expensive to maintain. Not to mention that they're expensive to buy, and I'm a dealer who can take advantage of wholesale prices if I can find one. I guess I could afford to buy a 308 today, but they're anemic and slow by today's performance standards.

Compare that to Porsche. I have an old 914 with a 911 6 cylinder engine. It's nearly bulletproof. Other than replacing an alternator in the last 3 years, all it's needed are regular maintenance items: brake pads, oil changes and tires. This is a 30 year old engine. Oh, and I flog it 3-4 times a year at Driver's Education events, essentially 4 hours of 'racing' in each weekend. I'm thinking about buying a GT3, but even it's a little pricey for my budget.

So, would I rather have a Porsche that I can afford and it will be ready to drive when I am. Or, do I lust for a Ferrari that I can't yet afford?? Me, I'll take the Porsche now, and if the Ferrari moment comes along, I'll go for it.

For me, the more realistic debate is BMW vs. Porsche, but that's another post.....

I have recently been reading some of your blog posts and how found interest in your post and your blogging experience.

I have sent along a more formal email addressing my interest and asking for your participation in non-formal interview that I would like to conduct as part of my MBA dissertation research.

I hope that we can be in contact soon.
Regards
