The Frog

I shudder almost every time I see a Buick. It’s sad, really, that General Motors (The General) has let the Buick brand slide down almost to the point of extinction. They have even called it a “damaged brand” in public.

I have a friend who drives one. I haven’t said anything, but I wanna walk up to him and shake him and ask him why he bought that car. Methinks it’s a Company car for him, one provided by a good conservative American company (read: OLD), and they still believe that buying American iron is the only way to go.

My first car was a Buick LeSabre. My dad and I reworked it after my grandfather crashed it, and I used it beginning my freshman year in college. It was a fun car. A couple years later I even went to work on the engine to bypass some minimal emissions (shhhh, don’t tell the EPA).

What’s ironic is that one of my brothers was driving that car after I had moved on and he now works in the EPA. He called the car ‘the frog’, presumably because it was green, and kinda peppy. V8 American iron. But he never knew that I slightly modified the engine. If I told him now, I’m sure that I’d get a little lecture as he’s become a bit of a tree hugger.

Ahhh, the memories made in that car! Back in the days of (egad) bench seats, there were many less mobility issues when you weren’t driving, and weren’t alone. ;-) Now, I wouldn’t be caught dead with a front bench seat, I’m so dependent upon the appointments of a bucket seat.

Maybe someday The General will get their act together and make an interesting rear wheel drive Buick that would still appeal to us Baby Boomers, even if it has bucket seats. Reminds me of the red Ford LTD that I was using to do donuts in the parking lot when I hit a curb. But, that’s another story….

I have two automotive maintenance questions:

1) What is the best website for purchasing maintenance items such as oil filters, air filters, etc. at a great price? I did a Google search and found the website shown below for my 2005 Honda Odyssey, but would like to hear from others.

http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.com/parts/autopartswarehouse/wizard.jsp?year=2005&make=HO&model=ODY-EX-002&part=Air%20Filter&dp=true

2) Are K&N Washable, Reusable Air Filters any good? Do they really make more power and increase fuel milage?

I have another car maintenance question. For standard automotive maintenance, should I be 1) using my local dealership (i.e. Goodson Honda), 2) purchase oil, oil filter, air filter, etc. from some place like AutoZone or some online website and do it myself, 3) use some local establishment like JiffyLube, 4) Mom and Pop shop, or 5) Other?

What is the best thing to do with a high-quality receiver and speakers that have been taken out of a vehicle prior to trade-in and are no longer being used? We have an Alpine CDE-7828 FM/AM CD receiver and CX5/CX9 Boston Acoustics speakers. Are these of any value?

If you go to my website, www.dfwcarfinder.com/Enthusiasts.html, you will see a list of auto parts links down the page. In addition, I will add those links to my blog page.

Yes, K&N air filters are a good long term investment, and may give you a *small* amount of HP and fuel economy.

Do It Yourself (DIY) repairs, and where to go for paid repairs are a function and relationship with your gearhead talent and pocketbook. If you have talent (and time), DIY. If you *think* you might mess it up, give it to someone else, or have a knowledgeable friend come help you the first time, like with changing brake pads.

For paid repairs, new car dealer = more $$$. If it's warranty, take it to the new car dealer. And, if you're having warranty work done, it might be worth the extra expense to have non-warranty work done while you're there since it's more convenient and takes less time. If you're talking only non-warranty work, take it to a trusted independent mechanic.

For the stereo, you might consider putting the equipment in one of your current vehicles. Aftermarket generally is better than factory, unless you have a premuim bose system or somesuch. Else, there's always Ebay.
